Six Decades of Experience in Ophthalmic Lens Manufacturing
GKB Vision is an established ophthalmic lens manufacturer with a heritage spanning more than six decades. The GKB Group traces its origins to 1960, with its manufacturing operations in Goa, India, beginning in 1981 with the establishment of GKB Ophthalmics Ltd.
From its early focus on single vision glass ophthalmic lenses, the Group has progressively expanded its manufacturing capabilities to include glass lenses, bifocal and progressive lenses, ophthalmic moulds, plastic lenses, photochromic lenses, polarized lenses and RX lens manufacturing.
Today, GKB Vision combines extensive manufacturing experience with evolving technology, process expertise and a commitment to quality, serving the requirements of the global ophthalmic and optical industry.
Our Journey
The GKB Group’s journey in ophthalmic manufacturing began in 1981 in Goa, India, with GKB Ophthalmics Ltd., promoted by Mr. K. G. Gupta. The company commenced manufacturing single vision glass ophthalmic lenses, establishing the foundation for GKB’s expertise in precision optical manufacturing.
In 2000, GKB Vision Ltd. was established in collaboration with Ratio Optics GmbH, Germany, for the manufacture of bifocal glass ophthalmic lenses. German machinery and manufacturing know-how were introduced into the operation, strengthening GKB Vision’s technical capabilities and establishing a strong foundation for international-quality manufacturing.
From the beginning, GKB Vision maintained a strong export-oriented focus, developing a range of glass ophthalmic lenses for customers in international markets.
In 2002, the company expanded its glass lens portfolio with the introduction of glass progressive lenses, available in both white and photochromic materials.
The company’s capabilities expanded further in 2005 with the commencement of manufacturing glass bifocal moulds for export as well as for its own production requirements. GKB Vision developed expertise across a broad range of bifocal mould designs, including:
- Curve-Top bifocal moulds
- Flat-Top bifocal moulds
- Round bifocal moulds
- Trifocal moulds
- Lenticular moulds
- Aspheric moulds
- Aspheric Lenticular moulds
- E-Line / Executive moulds
From Glass to Advanced Ophthalmic Lens Technologies
Over the years, GKB Vision has continuously expanded beyond conventional glass lens processing. The company has incorporated advanced technologies in quality control, process optimization, precision marking and engraving, while continually developing manufacturing processes focused on consistency, efficiency and cost effectiveness.
A significant milestone in the company’s history was reached on 2 July 2015, when GKB Vision Ltd. became a subsidiary of the Essilor Group.
The company subsequently continued its product and manufacturing expansion through forward integration and the development of new lens technologies.
In 2016, GKB Vision expanded into glass RX lens manufacturing, adding prescription lens manufacturing capabilities to its operations.
In 2018, the company successfully commenced the manufacture of plastic photochromic lenses, including its Q-Shade+ photochromic lens technology.
Functional Lenses — Expanding the Role of Ophthalmic Lenses
In 2025, GKB Vision expanded its product portfolio with the introduction of three new Functional Lens products, each developed with a specific application and visual environment in mind.
ClariSport™
Designed for outdoor sports and active lifestyles, ClariSport™ is intended for activities such as golf, pickleball, cycling and other outdoor pursuits, offering a lens solution tailored to the visual demands of active environments.
GlareDefence™
Designed for night-time driving and high-glare environments, GlareDefence™ is intended to help reduce the discomfort associated with oncoming vehicle headlights and intense artificial lighting, including glare encountered around stadiums and other illuminated environments.
ScreenShield™
Designed for modern screen-centric lifestyles, ScreenShield™ is developed to provide protection against UV and selected blue-violet light wavelengths. Its spectral filtration is designed to address a broader range of potentially undesirable light than conventional blue-filtering lenses.
Looking Ahead
GKB Vision continues to build on its long-standing expertise in ophthalmic lens manufacturing while investing in new products, advanced technologies and expanded manufacturing capabilities.
The company’s focus remains on broadening its portfolio of specialty and functional ophthalmic lenses, while further strengthening its capabilities in glass lens and mould manufacturing and developing solutions to meet the evolving needs of the global optical industry.
